PSALM 51

Psalm 51:1   (David cries out)
“Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According to the multitudes of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions."

Isaiah 43:25; Isaiah 44:22
(God Answers)
“I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake”

“I have blotted out, like a thick cloud, your transgressions, And like a cloud, your sins.  Return to Me, for I have redeemed you.”

Psalm 51:2    (David cries out)
"Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin."
Hebrews 9:12-14   (Paul testifies)
"Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.  For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?"

Psalm 51:3-4 (David confesses)
“For I acknowledge my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me.  Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight – That You may be found just when You speak, And blameless when You judge.”
2Samuel 12:12-13  (God forgives)
"For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, before the sun.  Then David said to Nathan, 'I have sinned against the Lord.'  And Nathan said to David, 'The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die.' "

Psalm 51:5-7
  (David prays)
“Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me.  Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts.  And in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom.  Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.”
1:18  (God promises)
" 'Come now, and let us reason together,' says the Lord, 'Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.' "

Psalm 51:8
  (David mourns)
“Make me to hear joy and gladness, that the bones which You have broken may rejoice.”
Matthew 5:4
  (God blesses)
"Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted."

Psalm 51:9-11
  (David seeks restoration)
"Hide Your face from my sins, And blot out all my iniquities.  Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.  Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me."
11:13  (Jesus is the Giver of Life)
"If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!"

Psalm 51:12
  (David sings!)
“Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And uphold me with Your generous Spirit.”
2Corinthians 3:17  (The Spirit sets us free)
"Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty."

Psalm 51:13-16  (David yearns to serve God)
"Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners shall be converted to You.  Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, The God of my salvation, And my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness.  O Lord, open my lips, And my mouth shall show forth Your praise.  For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering."
1Samuel 15:22  (God desires our hearts)
"Then Samuel said:  'Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings ans sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the Lord?  Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams."

Psalm 51:17
  (David understands)
"The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart - These, O God, You will not despise."
Psalm 34:18  (God comforts)
"The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit."

Psalm 51:18-19  (David is restored)
"Do good in Your good pleasure to Zion; Build the walls of Jerusalem.  Then You shall be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, With burnt offering and whole burnt offering; Then they shall offer bulls on Your altar."
"Psalm 4:5  (God is Worthy)
"Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, And put your trust in the Lord."
