  • Did you know you are a masterpiece?  A masterpiece is defined as one's greatest piece of work.  We might argue that God's masterpiece would be the spectacular beauty of the Grand Canyon or Alaska's aurora borealis.  High contenders for the title might also be the breathtaking waterfalls of Brazil or the remarkable beauty of Australia's Great Barrier Reef, but the Bible tells something special.  Unlike anything else that God created, we alone are created in His image.  We are His work of art, His masterpiece.
In Ephesians 2:10, we see that "we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them."  As God's workmanship, a word meaning His masterpiece, we are created for good works which are the aim of our salvation and the evidence of our faith.  Works never produce salvation, but salvation always produces good works.  They are the consequences, not the causes, of salvation.  In Jeremiah 29:11 we read the familiar words, "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" (NIV).  As parents, we have plans that aim to bring our children a future and a hope.  We plan and prepare good works that they should walk in them.  Our Heavenly Father too, has a plan and a purpose for His children and has prepared good works that we should walk in them.

Trusting that God has a plan and a purpose for our lives gives us the answer as to why we exist, and for what purpose we are on earth.  Looking back over our life, we can often see how God has been preparing us to walk in the works He prepared beforehand for us.  Trusting that God is true to His Word, we can take the words of Jeremiah 29 to heart as we listened and wait patiently for the Lord to reveal His plan.

What has God done in your life that has prepared you for the plans that He says He has for you?  God's initial work in our lives, according to John 6:29, is to believe in Jesus Christ.  From there we discover His plan from the Scriptures as we grow to trust and follow Him as He leads, using the natural talents and desires He has given us.  In  Romans 8:28 we read, "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose..."  Education, jobs, friends, life - they all bring us experiences that make up the person we are today.  Why not trust God at His Word, working all things together that we, as His masterpiece, might walk in the good works that He has prepared for us.
